I just cleaned my nose ring for the first time and im pretty sure i did it wrong.?

i used clear dial soap. it had a scent to it though but it was really the only clear antibacterial soap that i have in my house, i washed my hands, then put water and soap on my fingers then lathered the piercing, but i pushed it out so that i could get the post.. then rinsed it, then dried around the post with a q-tip then pushed it back in and put some bactine on the outside just in case some bacteria got there. its itchy now and red. i feeel like i messed it up. i did just get it pierced yesterday, should i have waited longer to start cleaning it?
