Astma VS tobacco smoke?

My girlfriend tells me that because of her astma she can't take the scent of tobacco smoke or she will get Bad symptoms from it. However I've met a lot of people throught the years that has astma and are smokers themselves and the smoking doesnt seem to bother them. So is the "can't stand smokers" more of a "don't like smokers" kind of thing??
